Arts and Creativity 

Art-based activities are a powerful tool in supporting creative development, communication, knowledge and understanding of the world. At Burton Stather we believe in having a broad and balanced art curriculum, which uses a variety of media (including ICT) to foster innovation and creativity, develops skills as well as free and personal expression. Our art curriculum is designed to:

• stimulate creativity and imagination

• provide visual, tactile and sensory experiences

• offer unique ways of responding to the world

• be a form of communication about what is seen, felt or thought

• help children to understand the use of materials and processes

• encourage the exploration of the visual elements of shape, line, pattern, colour, form, space, tone and texture

• offer insights into how artists, craftspeople and designers work

• offer a cultural context for art and design

• provide an opportunity to understand and enjoy the arts.

Reception

Children in reception learn how to hold and use a range of art equipment correctly to produce and range of marks, patterns and textures. They begin to draw from observation and as well as their imaginations using colour, pattern, texture and line.  The children learn how to use appropriate language  for describing media and simple techniques.

Year 1 & 2

Children in years 1 and 2 are taught to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products. Drawing, painting and sculpture are used to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. They are taught how to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. The children learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities as well as making links to their own work.

Years 3 & 4

Children in years 3 and 4 are taught how to create sketchbooks to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas. They are taught how to improve their art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay] The children learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Years 5&6

Children in years 5 and 6 are taught how to develop their sketchbooks and use for projects and more sophisticated art work. They are taught how to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay] The children continue to learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Music

Music is a creative art we believe every child should be given the opportunity to benefit from. Learning is planned according to pupils’ needs and focuses on musical skills, language, knowledge and understanding. Pupils spend most of their time making, practising and internalising music.

Children are taught how to listen more accurately to their own work, helped to identify for themselves where improvements were needed, and shown how to improve through expert musical modelling by the teacher. We integrate music into all of our topics and . We integrate music into all of our topics and these are used in the end of term celebrations.

Dance

Dance has a unique role to play in the curriculum as the art form that combines physical literacy with the imagination and creativity. Children are taught how to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of composing, performing and appreciating dance from different social, historical and social contexts. Children are given a widening cultural awareness and understanding of dance as an art form, which they can use as a vehicle for learning across the school curriculum. Dance is integrated into our topic and is no longer seen as part of the PE curriculum but rather as an opportunity for the children to express themselves stimulate their creativity and imagination.
